10TH DISTRICT MEETING

DECEMBER 6, 2009

The Joint Meeting of the 10th District was opened in proper form by Commander Terry Moore. The 10th District Color Guard posted the Colors.

Commander Eddie Crawford and Auxiliary President Evelyn Crawford of Eatonton Post 583 welcomed us.

Commander Moore introduced our guests: Department Jr. Vice Bill Lienhop, S.A.L. Detachment of Ga. Sr. Vice Trent Costley.

Sick Call: Larry Crosby of Post 233 Loganville.

Sgt-at-Arms Butch Henson draped the charter in memory of our fallen comrades.

Chaplin Sandra Shockley read the names of members who have passed on. "Taps" was played by Color Guard member Bill Henry.

Chaplin Shockley played the trumpet while members sang "Silent Night".

Chaplin Shockley read an article about Pearl Harbor. The devotion was taken from 1 John 1:9, Psalms 7:17, and Isaiah 61:3

Sgt-at-Arms Butch Henson undraped the charter.

Winners of the drawings: Nurses Scholarships: Diane Adair (Post 233)

The meeting adjourned at 11:30 a.m.

AFTERNOON SESSION: 12:15 P.M.

The meeting was opened in proper form by Commander Terry Moore. District Adjutant Diane adair took the Officer’s Roll Call. Nine officers were present. Three were absent. One was dismissed. Post Roll Call was taken with 12 Posts present.

Minutes of the Sept. 13 meeting were passed out for all to read. Minutes were approved with one correction. All S.A.L. members were excused to have a meeting with Sr. Vice Trent Costley.

Committee Reports:

Boy Scouts: Chairman Tommy Hatton reported that Post 233 has three boys up for Eagle Scout. Post 583 also has three boys up for Eagle Scout.

Baseball: Chairman Butch Henson reported that registration will be online this year. You can only register with a credit card. He will have a December meeting to set the dates for National. Everything will go through National online. The cost has increased $50.00 for Sr. teams and $25.00 for Jr. teams. We need more teams.

Blood Drive: Chairman Jerry Mahaffey reported that the next Blood Drive at Post 233 will be February 19, 2010. The Blood Drive in November was successful with 43 units donated. He encouraged all members to report anytime they give blood. The reports are put on the consolidated reports for Department.

Oratorical: Chairman Larry Hoff reported that the District contest will be the last Friday of January, 2010. It will be held at Post 233 in Loganville. Judges are needed. The Area contest will be February 28, 2010. It will be held at Post 233 in Loganville. The Department contest will be March 6, 2010.

ROTC: Col. Hoff reported that the last Drill Meet was canceled. District 10 donated $1000.00 to buy trophies and supplies. These will be used for the next Drill Meet. The ROTC program is growing.

National Security: Chairman Larry Hoff passed out his report for all to read. The administration has published a "White Paper" outlining general consideration for the war in Afghanistan. The full report will be attached to these signed minutes.

Legion Riders: Al Burns reported that they had a bar-b-cue and cleared $300.00. They did a few escort rides for charities and escorted the Post 233 train and Santa Claus to the tree lighting" in Loganville.

Finance Report: Finance Officer Lee Griswold reported a balance of $6,054.07 as of 12/06/09. Finance report was approved pending audit. The short form report will be attached to these minutes.

Vice Commander Reports:

Sr. Vice Tommy Hatton: Loganville Post 233…Membership is 63%

Eatonton Post 19…Membership is 56%

Eatonton Post 583…Membership is 83%

Elberton Post 14

Jr. Vice Coy Gibson: Visited three posts.

Athens Post 20… Membership is 79.5%

Danielsville Post 39…Membership is 88.5%

Athens Post 185…Membership is 76.3%

Lexington Post 123… Membership is 79.9%

Jr. Vice Ruckdeschel: Visited all posts to discuss the importance of membership and the Legion programs. In addition, he participated as the 10th District Representative in the Social Circle City Parade. He attended Veteran’s Day Services on November 11 at the Mews Retirement Home in Social Circle and Great Oaks Retirement Home in Monroe. On November 14, he attended services at Rest Haven Cemetery in Monroe, which was a combined service with Post 64 and Post 531.

Post 64 has continued to support the Mary Hataway Memorial Scholarship by donating $2000.00 to the Walton County Learning Center, an alternative school to complete and graduate High School.

Post 92 held a 9/11 Memorial Walk, which was well attended and is planned again for next year. Post members presented each fourth grader with a dictionary. One day a month the Post serves coffee and donuts to all veterans who come out.

Post 37 held it’s Veteran’s Day Ceremony at the High School this year for the first time. Thay estimated that well over 1,500 students and adults attended the ceremony.

Commander Moore reported that the Membership Caravan had a great turnout.

Service Officer’s School is in the process of setting up for the 10th District. It will probably be hosted in Conyers at Post 77. Any may attend.

The 10th District Oratorical Contest will be at Post 233 in Loganville.

Consolidated reports must be filled out by all posts.

New Business: Commander Boss of Post 233 made a motion for the 10th District Commander to have an annual discretionary fund of $250.00. It is to be used without immediate authorization of the Finance Officer or other members. The motion was seconded and passed.

Al Burns reported that the National Commander will be arriving in January and the Legion Riders will escort him the entire trip. He will visit Post 205 Augusta on Jan. 21, Post 17 Dublin on Jan. 22, Post 594 Warner Robins on Jan.22, Post 258 Jonesboro on Jan.23, and Post 127 Buford on Jan. 23. All members are encouraged to come out support the escort.

Commander Boss of Post 233 Loganville made a motion for the 10th District to support Larry Hoff as a candidate for Department Sr. Vice Commander. The Resolution was read by Commander Moore. The motion was seconded and passed.

Larry Hoff made a motion for the 10th District to donate $1000.00 to the Commander’s Fund. The check will be presented in Augusta. The motion was seconded and passed.

Al Burns reported that the Legion Riders concluded their 50/50 raffle last month and $7000.00 was donated to the Commander’s fund.

Winder Post 53 is on probation for 8 or 9 months.

Department Jr. Vice Bill Lienhop reported that Spring Conference will be March 20-21. Department Convention will be June 25-27 in Augusta. National Convention will be August 27-Sept. 2 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.

Sgt-at-Arms Butch Henson made a motion for the 10th District to purchase new flag holders. The motion was seconded and passed.

Commander Moore appointed Gerry Lane to replace Ken Thompson as Jr. Vice. Ken is battling cancer and we need to keep him in our prayers.

Jerry Childers of Monroe Post 64 reported that the Ga. War Veterans Home needs sweat suits and big jackets.

Commander Crawford of Eatonton Post 583 reported that they have given donations to the Ga, War Veterans Home.

Sgt-at-Arms Butch Henson made a motion for the 10th District to purchase new flag holders. A double flag holder is preferred if available. The motion was seconded and passed.

Old Business:

10th District is 900 short of our membership goal. We are at 61%.

Commander Boss reported we need to make money with "pull tabs". We will be at the capitol again this year trying to get this passed.

For the Good of the Legion:

Commander Moore reported that Covington Post 32 will be donating $1040.00 to the 48th Brigade (which is deployed out of Covington). The money is to buy Christmas presents for 10-13 year olds in the Covington area.

On December 7, 2009 Conyers Post 77 Color Guard will be posting the "colors" at the dedication of the largest memorial park in the United States for veterans. All members are invited to come. The event will start at 6:00 p.m. at Black Shoals Lake.

Benny Stevenson of Conyers Post 77 suggested that all districts send a letter to their congressman and representatives. The letters would be signed by all members.

With no further business on the floor, the meeting was closed in proper form with the Color Guard retrieving the Colors. The meeting was adjourned at 1:15 p.m.
