Wayne Shaw, a disabled Vietnam veteran, is presented with a check by Dr. Elmer Swartzmeyer, Service Officer of American Legion Post 64, to cover a delinquent bill. Mr. Shaw came to the attention of Post 64 as a result of a local newspaper story indicating his gas had been cut off on the coldest night of the year. A post member paid the gas bill allowing service to be restored.

Harry Lemonds of Monroe’s American Legion Post 64 and school students raise the American Flag for the first time at the new Monroe Elementary School

this ceremony dedicating the school was held February 12th, 2007.

Post 64 donated the American and Georgia flags to the school.

Dr. Elmer Swartzmeyer, Service Officer for Post 64, presents a check for $2000.00 to Mr. Douglas Ward, principal of the Walton County Performance Learning Center to establish the Mary T. Hataway Educational Student Incentive Program. The PLC is a non-traditional school for high school students who are not succeeding in a traditional school setting. The primary purpose of the PLC is to graduate students who otherwise would not graduate.

The American Legion Mary T. Hataway Educational Student Incentive Program

The American Legion Mary T. Hataway Educational Student Incentive Program has been established by American Legion Post 64, the Lindsey-Garrett Post of Monroe, to honor the memory of Mary T. Hataway and further the education of Monroe and Walton County students.  Mary Thompson Hataway was born June 18, 1917, to Roy and Clarice Adams Thompson and lived her entire life in Monroe.  She married James. C. Hataway on December 11, 1938.  She retired from Walton Cotton Mill and later from The Walton Tribune where she worked for ten years as Women’s Editor.

Mr. Hataway served in WWII and was a commander of Post 64 for many years.  The couple had no children and devoted their lives to The American Legion.  Mrs. Hataway served eleven years as president of Auxiliary Unit 64 from 1957-1958 and 1978-1988. She was a member of the auxiliary for fifty-nine years. She was a charter member of the Walton County Historical Society and did volunteer work for the Red Cross, the Walton County Senior Citizens Center, Walton County Regional Hospital, Special Olympics and other charitable groups.

Mary Hataway was known as Monroe’s Poppy Lady for her efforts to continue the tradition started by Miss Moina Michael of Walton County to honor veterans of WWI. In later years the wearing of the red poppy has become a symbol for remembrance of the sacrifices of all veterans, but particularly those that returned disabled. If you look closely at her portrait you can see she is wearing a red poppy in her lapel. Mary T. Hataway passed away on February 10, 2006, at the age of 88. This fund has been established and is supported by The American Legion and the Sons of the American Legion of Monroe Post 64. It is fervently hoped that recipients will use this opportunity to complete their high school education. All have our best wishes for successful futures.
